Yes.. a chinasoft M1A1 should suit your dad just fine. 
An MP40 would also do as a captured weapon...
TM1911 is fine for brit or yank...
You will want a main weapon though... a pistol will only be useful as a backup.

Well if it looks similar then that's fine... if its just someone you know rather than a re-enactor or WW2 airsofter then its unlikely to actually be the same as that, as that's a reasonably good repro of a proper WW2 2nd pattern denison smock.
Its more likely to be a post war Belgian smock. The easiest way to tell for sure is to count the poppers on the lower pockets. If there's more than one on a pocket then its not WW2 or a repro. Most belgian smocks I've seen have 6 poppers on each of the lower pockets
If it is a Belgian one, then its fine to use, but don't pay much more than £30 for it.
If you want advice, then by all means send me pictures of the smock.
That's a very modern jacket. I'd leave it well alone.
That's a shame. Sounds like you need to frequent a different site than your local one!! The upside to your dilemma is that Brit kit can be very affordable - webbing, helmets, berets, insignia, etc. all cheap as chips if you look in the right places. Don't get too hung up on weapons. Apart from the ubiquitous Thompson, the Brits loved to get their hands on Yank Garands, carbines and 1911s whenever they could. MP40s were also a very popular captured weapon, probably because there were plentiful supplies of German 9mm ammo all over Europe.

and If you're goin Brit as you're more the size that british sqaddies were at that time you should be able to get 49 pattern at really cheap prices I've seen bd blouses going for a fiver, plus Sabre Sales is your friend for British webbing

Webbing belt
Pair of shoulder straps
Pair of basic pouches
Water bottle
what about a TEHL part 2 - turn up Brit Polish looking - lunchtime - ditch the gear - off we go lol

Well that is the million dollar question I think ww2 games will be part of the site after Husky, and I hope I will be a regular at other games as well, there are a few of my boys that want a change from everyday airsoft. and they are looking for a place to come and enjoy the game all over again, don't get me wrong I still love a good game but am looking for something special to look forward to.

please do not feel that you have to have everything from one of the impression kit lists.
Base your uniform, kit and weapons on the 'look-a-like' guides - this will mean if you've already got items of the list, you can wear them/ use them etc - especially when starting out.
Please remember this fact - IT'S THE TAKING PART THAT COUNTS
I'm sure everyone will agree with the above statement, go minimal on the kit/equipment etc - until you decide WW2 airsoft is what you and your dad want to do.
Those of us who buy more ww2 looking uniforms, equipment and weapons do so to enhance our own experience of WW2 airsoft - but THIS IS NOT THE 'LAW'
It's better that you make it to a game or two and decide, if this is the style of gameplay that you enjoy.

My denison came from Replicaters, as did my denim battledress and I'm well happy with both. He makes them to order so you just send him your measurements. Takes a good few weeks to arrive though.
There can be a big difference in price for stuff depending on where you buy from. That's where this forum really pays off as with a bit of searching and the odd question you can leverage everyone else's research. As a rule of thumb, people only use Soldier of Fortune as a last resort. They have a lot of stock but can be very expensive - hence the moniker Costa Fortune. Start with Sabre or Warren at Shoot 'n' Scoot (both contacts can be found on this forum). They are Old School retailers and you really need to pick up the phone and ask if they have what you need as their stock changes constantly. The same goes with army surplus stores. Look up the ones nearby and call them up or go and visit them. Their stock will be 95% DPM, but you never know what the guv'nor has in out in the shed
If, like most of us, you don't have a bottomless wallet then be prepared to spend quite a bit of time getting a WWII loadout together. Mine has taken me well over a year and it's still not quite there yet. But JD7 is absolutely right, the main thing is to get out and skirmish, so don't wait until everything is perfect, just run what you brung.

Don't buy a beret from replicaters... they're rubbish...
You're better off just buying a modern one from a surplus store.
The best ones to buy are from SoF or WPG and won't cost you much more than a new modern one.
As for denny, replicaters are okay, but don't get it very wet, the dye will run a LOT. Also note replicaters are notoriously slow (I'm finding this myself at the moment).
